St. Michael and All Angels church members are involved in many different ministries which benefit both the church and those outside the church. We believe that each Christian has been given one or more spiritual gifts and talents which need to be used for the spread of the Kingdom of God, and the growth of the Church. We seek to match the gifts of our members with suitable ministry options in order to help each member be effective members of the Body of Christ. Some of the major ministries of the church include:
The Vestry is like a board of directors for the church. The leaders of the Vestry (the Wardens) are selected along with the regular members at the Annual Church Meeting. Vestry members serve a three-year term, the wardens serve a two-year term. The Vestry is the governing body for the church. It makes decisions regarding financial, logistical, personnel, spiritual, and other practicalities which go into running a church. A vestry member must be a regular contributor, active member, committed Christian, a person of prayer, and enthusiastic.
LAY EUCHARISTIC
MINISTERS/LAY READERS
Lay Readers are those members who are trained to lead portions of our Sunday services. They serve as Lectors (those who read the lessons), Prayer leaders (those who lead the Psalms and Prayers of the People), and Chalice bearers (those who distribute the chalice at the time of Holy Communion). Lay Eucharistic Ministers are those trained in the above and trained to take Communion to the sick and shut-in.
ACOLYTES
Acolytes are youth and adults who have been trained to serve at the altar and assist in the services we have. They carry crosses and torches in processions, serve the priest in preparation for Holy Communion, and assist in other ways.
USHERS
Ushers are those trained to assist the congregation before, during, or after the church service. They pass out bulletins, assist in seating and Communion, and collect the offerings from the congregation. Men and women may be ushers.
GREETERS
Greeters are those trained to welcome guests and members into the church services. They assist in identifying and welcoming guests, seeking to make the guest feel comfortable upon their arrival.
CHOIR
St. Michael’s believes in the power of music. Its choir, though small, sings with spirit both contemporary and traditional music. Along with organ and piano music, guitars are frequently used to provide a variety in our musical offerings to the Lord.
ALTAR GUILD
The Altar Guild is made up of those trained to prepare the Sanctuary for worship services. They prepare the Altar, change the hangings in the church to reflect the various seasons, take care of the flowers on the Altar, and prepare the priest’s vestments.
YOUTH GROUP
The Youth Group is led by two adult advisors and consists of between 6-12 youth (9-12th grades). They are in the planning stages for a regular meeting beyond Sunday mornings. They also do periodic outreach projects.
WOMEN’S GUILD
(EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN)
All the women of the parish are considered members of the Women’s Guild. They meet monthly during the school year for fellowship, food, and discussion. They support various outreach and ministry projects.
MEN’S BROTHERHOOD
All men of the parish are considered members of the Brotherhood. This group meets monthly for fellowship and to plan maintenance projects for the church buildings and grounds.
PRAYER CHAIN
Members of the church work together to lift up prayer requests to the Lord. Any member of the chain can be contacted with a request. That request is then passed around the rest of the chain. You may also call the church office with prayer requests.
GUARDIAN ANGEL GIFT
SHOP
St. Michael’s has a gift shop that is open on Sunday mornings and by appointment. The gift shop contains jewelry, knickknacks, a few books, and other religious items.
OUTREACH PROJECTS
Many groups and individuals in the parish are involved in outreach projects. These include missionary trips, assistance at local shelters, Christmas gift baskets, visiting shut-ins, School 61, etc.
HEALING MINISTRY
Ministry to Caregivers and Seniors
We are setting up a database for senior issues. We have information on respite care, home health care, transportation, Senior centers, adult day care and more. It is our hope to make it easier for seniors and/or their families or caregivers to find the help they need as easily as possible. If we do not have the answers, we will get them for you.
